Those who inquire per the Beaujolais region beyond its superfluous 'Nouveau' will be rewarded with an "in for life" love of the category. The best wines come from the region's ten "Cru's," or sub-regions (Moulin-au-Vent, Morgon, etc.), and the rarest of these is Chenas. Piron's "Quartz" is a sought-for benchmark of that little land. This takes easygoing, charming Gamay to a place of more dark and sturdy, mineral-laden importance. It is actually age-worthy. A big improvement on most Red Burgundies in this price range!
