2013 FORTIA 'Cuvee du Baron' Chateauneuf du Pape
2013 was not a stunner for the Rhone. It was simply good, easily serviceable, nothing to sneeze at nor worship. In such not-quite-trophy wine years it is wise to seek out the most traditional makers. Vintage variations are barely noticeable from producers less pressured by the press. Chateau Fortia NEVER tries to make the biggest, most modern wine in the region. They'd rather faithfully represent the place more consistently. Why? This winery had much to do with establishing the AOC about a hundred years ago, so it sticks to its guns; delivery authenticity. With their 2013 Cuvee du Baron bottling that happens very nicely. Red fruit, cigar, iodine, and that oh-so-Rhone-ish sense of airborne herbes occur in delicious, very slurp-able balance. We noted this a year ago: Among 25 different 2013 Chateauneuf tried at an industry tasting we chose this 2013 Fortia as one of 8 or 9 2013's to show you at our annual CdP event.
Fast forward: I was offered a better wholesale if I bought all that was left on the West Coast. And I did, but now there's a problem: I keep opening it, drinking it, and opening another. Friends, I have a Fortia Chateauneuf problem. I need your intervention.
Winesearcher shows that even East Coast, tiny profit retailers have this at about $35, bottom cost. I can beat that if you'll play hard.
